FreeGender engages local councilors on gender-based violence

29 November - Human Rights - Epilepsy South Africa launches the Help Keep Us Safe campaign

In today’s show, we spoke to Wynand du Toit - national office fundraiser at Epilepsy South Africa. We were talking about the Help Keep Us Safe campaign. Centre for African Studies to host Africa Thinking Differently workshop

We were talking about the Africa Thinking Differently workshop that will b e hosted between the 13th to the 15th of December. This workshop is part of a collaborative project between the Centre for African Studies and ‘the names we give’ at the University of Cape Town, Chimurenga, the Africana Studies Department at Brown University, the Centre for Caribbean Thought at the University of the West Indies, and Faculty of Humanities at Addis Ababa University. They say there is a current crisis in the general history of thought and knowledge production. It is a crisis in which challenges for thinking and the practices of thinking itself are crucial. 28 November - Health - Nicus promotes PMTCT

In today’s show, we heard from Cornelia Owens – a Dietician from the University of Stellenbosch’s Nutrition Information Centre. On Thursday is the World Aids Day and the World Health Organization has recently updated their recommendations with regard to infant feeding for HIV positive mothers, and new clinical guidelines are being used for the provision of ARVs in the government sector. Remember, HIV positive pregnant women can give birth to health babies if they get the correct treatment. They can also breastfeed their infants with a minimum risk of transmitting the virus to the baby, but it is important that they both receive the correct treatment. Cornelia explained more. Westcott Primary School wins Vitality Healthy School Competition

We also spoke to John Robertson - Principal at Westcott Primary School, the winning school of the Vitality Healthy School Competition. The programme promotes physical activity and good nutrition to learners. Schools participating in the programme agree to initiate health promoting creative and sustainable activities to promote a healthy balanced lifestyle. The school with the healthiest initiatives wins a prize and gets announced as the school with the healthiest initiatives in South Africa for 2011. Mr Robertson explained more about their programme.

Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management to host World Aids Day gala concert

We closed off the show with an interview with Professor Jimmie Earl Perry – from Stellenbosch University’s Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management. The Africa centre in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Health will host their annual World Aids Day gala concert that aims to bring hope to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. In today’s show, we were joined by Ramaine Barreiro-Lloyd - Performer, choreographer and Owner o f RBL Productions. We were talking about Amazink Live. Amazink Live is culturally authentic, interactive South African musical and dining experience which takes place at the AmaZink Theatre in Khayamandi in Stellenbosch. Ramaine and Richard Hala, give a thrilling interactive performance and are supported by an 8-piece chorus of hand-picked waiters who can both serve and sing. Qhayiya Production Group to launch Umlungu: The Sakhu story

We closed off the show with an interview with Mongezi Mbebe - of Qhayiya Production Group and Sakhumzi Fonya. Qhayiya Production Group is launching a book about Sakhu, entitled Umlungu: The Sakhu story. Sakhu had a skin condition called Vitiligo at the age of 12 that has left his skin almost completely white. Vitiligo is said to be a rare skin condition that causes depigmentation of the body’s skin cells. People like Michael Jackson, Bollywood Actor Amitabh Bacchan have this condition. Tenderden House gets a thumbs-up from visitors

We also heard from Barbara Booysen – Facility Manager of Tenderden House, a place of safety for vulnerable children based in Wynberg. Last week, Western Cape MEC of Social Development, Albert Fritz led a US delegation of senators and representatives from the National Conference of State Legislatures on a visit to Tenterden House. The delegation visited to share international best practises on how to handle issues faced by the children. According to the MEC, the representatives were very impressed with the standards and level of activities that Tenterden uses to enable children to develop in a positive environment. This week is the Kangaroo Mother Care Awareness Week

We also spoke to Sister Louise Goosen – from the Mowbray Maternity Hospital. We were talking about Kangaroo Mother Care. This week is the Kangaroo Mother Care Awareness Week. Infants are considered for KMC if they have a low birth weight but are in a stable condition. Kangaroo mother care is defined as early, prolonged and continuous skin-to-skin contact between a mother and her newborn low birth weight infant, both in hospital and after early discharge, until at least the 40th week of postnatal gestational age. Kangaroo mother care does not need sophisticated equipment, can be applied almost anywhere, could contribute to the humanisation of neonatal care, and contain costs. Study suggets Cape Town workers are overworked

We also heard from Tina Mason - Area Director for Regus SA. According to a global survey by Regus, almost half of workers in South Africa, Cape Town work well over eight hours a day and over 45 percent regularly take work home to finish in the evening. They state that pressure on working hours has increased in recent years because of slow economic recovery in mature economies and very rapid growth in emerging ones. In South Africa, ranked 7th in the world for the prevalence of mood disorders and 6th for the prevalence of anxiety disorders by the South African Stress and Health, the long-term effects of this over-work could be damaging both to workers’ health and to overall productivity as workers drive themselves too hard and become disaffected, depressed or even physically ill. 15 November - Human Rights - Buckets of Hope project needs community’s help with non-perishable food items

In todays show, we heard from Fatima Martin – Social Auxillary Worker at the Cape Town Association for the Physically Disabled. The association launched the Buckets of Hope project in 2009 to address poverty and employment that many Physically Disabled people are faced with. With community support and assistance from dedicated volunteers, 120 families received buckets filled with essential food items. But the need is far greater than 120 families, their goal this year is to distribute 500 Buckets of Hope during the festive season and they require the community’s help to reach it. They require donations of 15litre buckets with lids, non-perishable food items or sponsorship of, or towards a completed bucket (1 bucket = R150.00). 14 November - Health - Wednesday marks the World COPD day

In today’s show, we heard from Professor Eric Bateman - Professor of Respiratory Medicine and director of the UCT Lung Institute. We were talking about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD. On Wednesday is World COPD day and the theme of this year is “Are you short of breath? You may have COPD! Ask your doctor about a simple breathing test called spirometry.” This positive message was chosen to raise awareness of spirometry as the gold standard for diagnosis of COPD, and emphasize the actions a person can take to safeguard his or her lung health. In addition, it raises awareness that breathlessness is not just an inevitable part of getting older. For people who have not been diagnosed with COPD, breathlessness is a signal that they should see their doctor and ask about a spirometry test to check their lung function. People who have COPD have difficulty breathing because they develop smaller air passageways and have partially destroyed alveoli. Professor Bateman explained more....

Lung Cancer survivor shares her story as part of the Lung Cancer Awareness Month

We also spoke to Carla-Jane Gluckman – Lung Cancer survivor. Carla was diagnosed with lung cancer ten years ago. According to experts, Lung cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men and the fourth most common cancer diagnosed in women. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and lung cancer patients and survivors are being encouraged to share their stories of the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, and the fact that non-smokers can also be diagnosed. Wage disparity between top execs and entry level employees too high in SA

We closed off the show with a feature produced by our news reporter Khanyisa Tabata. According to Professor Barney Jordaan - Director of the Africa Centre for Dispute Settlement at the University of Stellenbosch Business School, the wage disparity between top executives and entry level employees in South Africa is particularly high in comparison to other developing and in some cases, developed countries. Professor Jordaan says “South African companies are facing extreme pressure to address growing employee dissatisfaction due to wage disparities." He says employers must review existing structures, as well as investigate the most appropriate method of remuneration for their company structure. Do you agree or disagree?

09 November - Gender - Artscape Women’s Festival Director gives feedback

On Sakhisizwe today, we were joined by Marlene Le Roux – Director of Artscape Audience Development and Education. We were talking about the Annual Artscape Women’s Festival. The 5th annual Women's Festival took place in August with the theme Equal Justice. After 15 years of democracy, the country women's empowerment was evaluated. Professionals in the field made up the panel at the festival, they were asked to give feedback on 10 obstacles that’s getting in the way of gender equality. AfriSIDA hosting Enough is Enough seminar

And our last interview was with Gary Bonney – Director at AfriSIDA. AfriSIDA is a non profit organisation that focuses on HIV/AIDS training and domestic violence. They are leading with tools like Partner Profiling to prevent women getting into abusive relationships and innovating with concepts like Helping Hands to support those already in abusive relationships. Currently they are running a three day seminar called: Enough is enough - Preventing or stopping abusive relationships. Gary explained more. The next seminar will be on Saturday, the 12th of November between 9:00 to 11am and between 1:30 to 3:30pm at Vineyard Hotel in Newlands, Cape Town and Bloemendal Wine Estate, in Durbanville. 08 November - Human Rights - Isandla Institute to host a National Roundtable about ‘the Right to the City'

In today’s show, we spoke to Tristan Görgens - Policy researcher in the Urban Land Programme at the Isandla Institute. This programme seeks to use research, advocacy and the building of networks to address urban land issues in ways that unlock 'the right to the city' for all of its inhabitants. On Thursday, they will be hosting a National Roundtable about ‘the Right to the City'. The event to create an opportunity for government ministers, officials, civil society organisations and organisations of the urban poor to begin to jointly explore some of the challenges and opportunities in the development of South African cities. Press Freedom Commission invite comments on press freedom

We also heard from Dr Phillip Mtimkulu – Spokesperson for the Press Freedom Commission. The Commission has put out a call to the public to voice its opinion on regulation of print media in South Africa. Members of the public and consumers of newspapers, online publications and magazines are invited, to help shape the regulatory framework of SA’s print media by submitting their written views about media regulation in SA. The deadline for written submissions is the 30th of November 2011. The Commission will following receipt of submissions, also stage a series of public hearings around the country in January 2012. Public hearings will be held in the following centres of major print media activity: Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Bloemfontein and Johannesburg. Other details will follow in due course. 07 November - Health - Winning the fight against pneumonia

In today’s show, we heard from Dr John O’ Brien - specialist physician and expert on pneumonia and pulmonary disease. He joined us on the line to talk about Pneumonia. On November 12, the world will mark the 3rd World Pneumonia Day. Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs, filling them with fluid. It causes cough and fever and can make breathing difficult. It is also reported that Pneumonia is the world's leading killer of children under five, claiming one young life every 20 seconds. That's more than AIDS, Malaria and Measles combined but the good news is that we can win the fight against pneumonia. More than one million young lives can be saved annually with vaccines and antibiotics, reducing indoor air pollution and through breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Novo Nordisk launches “Changing Diabetes Campaign”

We also spoke to Dr Daksha Jivan– Specialist Endocrinologist and Diabetes Expert. We were talking about Diabetes. World Diabetes Day takes place annually on the 14th November and is driven globally by the International Diabetes Federation. In South Africa, pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk joins the IDF’s call to action by organizing a variety of events and activities under the auspices of the “Changing Diabetes Campaign” which aims to help raise diabetes awareness and drive home key messages. Dr Jivan explained more about how to manage diabetes. The Changing Diabetes will be in Cape Town soon. They will be offering free Diabetes screening that will include on the spot blood glucose testing, blood pressure checking and waist circumference measurements. According to media reports, Rape Crisis is facing a severe financial crisis that may force it to reduce services or even close down. This follows after four international donors withdrew their funding. 01 November - Human Rights - Communities urged to mobilise against gangsterism and drugs

In today’s show, we spoke to Hanif Loonat – Chairperson of the Western Cape Community Police Board. The Board has urged community members in Gang infested areas to mobilise against gangsterism and drugs. According to the board, SAPS on its own cannot attain the desired successes without the collective assistance and partnership of the said communities. The board says communities are silent on this most explosive circumstance we find ourselves in. According to the board our silence is going to lead us to a point of no return. SAPS in the month of October have confiscated 29 firearms with 39 arrests. .And searched more then 900 drug houses with 1158 arrests. All this in gang infested areas. The Provincial Commissioner and his team are asking the concerned communities to report these members by calling his office or your local CPF chairpersons. City high schools invited to elect Junior City Council

We also heard from Alderman Owen Kinahan – From the City of Cape Town. The reconstruction of the Junior City Council has now commenced with invitations to about 300 state and independent high schools across the city. All high schools who would like to participate in the Junior City Council are invited to do so before the 11th of November. The Cape Town Junior City Council provides a forum for the introduction of school-going youth to civic and community affairs, and the development of management and leadership skills. It does so to educate and uplift young people and to build leaders of the future. The composition of the JCC has been redesigned to more closely align the schools in each of the city’s 111 wards with governance and service delivery in Cape Town.
