Today we spoke to Cheryl Beaton – From Woodside Special Care Centre and Shafiek Rajap – from the Eoan Group School of the Performing Arts. Woodside Special Care Centre is a home for profoundly intellectually and physically disabled children and young adults. The school has been chosen as the beneficiary of the 2nd annual benefit concert which is presented by The Eoan Group School of the Performing Arts. The “We live to serve” benefit concert takes place tonight and tomorrow at the Joseph Stone Auditorium at 8pm. Tickets costs R40 per person per night. The National Prosecuting Authority established the centres in partnership with the Departments of Health, Justice and Constitutional Development, Social Development and the SA police service, to strengthen the fight against the abuse of women and children. Today had interview I had earlier this week with Sylvia Mdunyelwa – better known as “Mama Kaap” about a concert they are orgarnising together with Sbongile Khumalo a special tribute to Busi Mhlongo. This is a very special Womans Month musical production entitled 'Sistas Healing our Souls' at the Cape Town City Hall on the evening of 29 August. Mama Kaap is currently in Gauteng busy with rehearsals for the concert. The 'Sistas healing our Souls' concert will feature solo performances and collaborations by some of South Africa’s most loved and respected divas, including principal performers Abigail Kubheka, Gloria Bosman, Tina Schouw and Xolisa Dlamini, who will be backed by a 24-piece backing band of top musicians from across the country, such as jazz trumpeter Feya Faku, Cape Town saxophonist Shannon Mowday and trombonist Kelly Bell. Today we spoke was Dr. Dilshaad Asmal a dermatologist and we were talking about Acne. For Acne sufferers psychological effects are far worse than the physical effects but Dr Asmal says people need to know that acne can be treated. Migraines affect 15% of the general population, with the majority of migraine sufferers being female. Unfortunately, people not suffering from migraine tend to disbelieve the severe pain and debilitating effects of a migraine. This makes it all the more important to take a medication that will quickly and effectively treat the migraine attack, and return the sufferer to normal functioning. Today we spoke to Jennifer Ferguson – from Dignity for Abused Mothers or D.A.M. Every year about 40 women and their children end up on the streets of Cape Town as result of a violent crime. The group Dignity for Abused Mothers is devoted to helping women who are single parents, who have no fixed income and who are the survivors of a traumatic event beyond their control. DAM aims to empower them by giving them counseling, offering financial assistance, teaching them self defence and educating them on their rights. The Cape Peninsula University of Technology launched its Environmental Resource Centre yesterday and Centre will focus on the impact of environmental degradation on people, in particular marginalized communities, as well as environmental degradation caused by unsustainable human activities.
