Cuppa Day and Women in Business

We spoke to Fadwa Walker Community Mobiliser at Cancer Association of South Africa in aid of their initiatives to challenge all workplaces, businesses and services to open their hearts and raise awareness for those affected by cancer. They will be hosting a Women in Business event on the 11 August whereby all the proceeds raised on the day will go towards supporting cancer support groups. We spoke to Jeremiah Sweets 19-year-old singer, songwriter, producer, pianist and guitarist from Ravensmead Cape Town speaking about his music journey and how that has grown him as an upcoming artist. He has a sweet nurturing sound to his voice that can relate to people of all walks of life. His mom gave him his first instrument, whereby he has taught himself how to play. Women's Festival

We spoke to Gladys Joyce from Angel Wings Cape Town about their Woman’s Festival that they will be having in observatory on the 9 th of August. Gates open at 9am to 4pm and everyone is welcome to attend, as there will be something for everyone: from face painting, food, speakers all the way to entertainment. The entry fee is R5 for all and after the event they will be handing out food to people that lives on the streets, if you want to be part of bringing change you can donate to the angel wings Cape Town. Psychosocial Disability Awareness Month

We spoke to Rene Minnies manager at the Fountain House facility about Psychosocial Disability Awareness Month. A psychosocial disability is when a mental illness becomes pervasive and interferes in a person's functioning, thus preventing them from being able to claim their rights or to participate in society. The Fountain House facility is under the umbrella of the Cape Mental Health. They have programmes that focus on psychosocial rehab services to enable people with Psychosocial Disability to become inclusive in society. The other programme deals with work order day that focus on skills development looking of opportunity for work and family support, hence they do a lot of advocacy work. Some examples of Psychosocial Disability are, Schizoid disorders such as schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Gender Dynamix for Gender Equality

We spoke to Lynda Ichumane from Gender DynamiX about being transgender , the challenges that are regularly faced and how she overcame them. Gender Dynamix is the first African based organisation focusing solely on the transgender community. It is an Non governmental, Non-profit organisation , that aims to provide help, advice and information for those who seek to adjust their lives to live in the opposite gender role , as to that assigned to them at birth; or who are working to come to terms with their situation despite their genetic background. It provides resources, information and support to trans folks, their partners, family employers and the public. She explains that she was born a male but had identified as a woman since the age of 4 and says the community in KZN where she grew up, was very helpful despite a family who disowned her. South African Human Rights Commission talks about Xenophobia

Human Rights on Sakhisizwe had us speaking to Lesego Eugene Raphalane - Advocacy Officer of The South African Human Rights Commission (from the Western Cape Provincial Office) about Xenophobia. The South African Human Rights Commission was inaugurated in October 1995 as an independent chapter nine institution. It draws its mandate from the South African Constitution by way of the Human Rights Commission Act of 1994. It identifies, discusses and integrates strategic priority areas in line with the Human Rights Matrix. Raphalane defines Xenophobia as fear or hatred of people from foreign countries.  He brings to light "Afrophobia" which he describes as a hatred toward fellow African nationals, reiterating that the Commission condemns all discriminatory behavior. He adds that its a "small percentage" of people who need education about respecting people who are likely to be fleeing from civil war or worse circumstances. Embryologist Aqeel Morris tell us about Infertility

We also spoke to Aqeel Morris, a Reproductive  biologist and scientist working at Tygerberg Fertility Clinic , about infertility and treatments. He tells us about his interesting work of having to cultivate and assess male infertilities. He explains how he is part of the team responsible for growing embryos, incubating them and transferring them “back” into women. They assist struggling couples to have a child/children by cultivating and incubating embryos. Although “curing” fertility hasn’t been established, they find ways of by-passing the issue. There are various ways they try to help, such as treatments like: timed ovulation - which gives couples guidelines to which point in the woman’s cycle they should try to conceive; Inter Uterine Insemination (IUI) - which takes partners concentrated sperm and injects it directly into the uterus of woman; In vitro fertilization (IVF) - which removes eggs from females’ body, combines it with purified sperm and incubates it overnight. For health Mondays we spoke to Dr Fatimah Kimmie from Kimoramed , about Endometriosis. Kimoramed is a health center that offers reliable treatment with a focus on family and women’s healthcare. All KimoraMed doctors are certified by the Health Professions Council of South Africa, and offer services with compassion whilst adhering to contemporary global research guidelines. She describes Endometriosis as a painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus  (the endometrium) grows OUTSIDE your uterus. It most commonly involves the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining your pelvis.  It is a disease that often goes unnoticed until women fail to conceive and realise too late that they needed treatment. Symptoms include: Painful periods (dysmenorrhea), excessive bleeding , pain during or after sexual intercourse and Pain with bowel movements or urination.
