Dr Faatima Kimmie tells us about Endometriosis

She describes Endometriosis as a painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus  (the endometrium) grows OUTSIDE your uterus. It most commonly involves the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining your pelvis.  It is a disease that often goes unnoticed until women fail to conceive and realise too late that they needed treatment.

Symptoms include: Painful periods (dysmenorrhea), excessive bleeding, pain during or after sexual intercourse and Pain with bowel movements or urination. You may experience occasional heavy periods (menorrhagia) or bleeding between periods (menometrorrhagia). You may also experience fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, bloating or nausea, especially during menstrual periods.
We touched briefly on the strain infertility can put on a relationship and individual that cannot conceive and the negative impacts it can have.

She urges women to regularly go for pap smears from the first time they are sexually active, once every 3 years, and women above 40 to go once every 5 years. Everyone should do their bit in spreading awareness about the disorder and help women to get diagnosed early to avoid complications.
