Slavery

Image
Slavery: it is a concept we have all encountered in some way or another. Either in a history lesson or as one of our co-workers jokes about having too much work in the office. But the relevance of slavery persists even in today's increasingly equal and connected world. Later in today’s show we will talk about how the SA constitution guarantees the right against slavery, servitude, and forced labour, but we want to break down and understand what the word slavery actually means before that. We’re joined today by Mr Liam Goodacre, an educator and scholar who has been developing an interdisciplinary curriculum that focuses on slavery from various perspectives including the historical, the philosophical, and the linguistic. This interview is special to me because I studied under Mr Goodacre in India for a year, and I look back fondly towards our readings and critical discussions. Justice for victims of Gender-Based Violence

Image
Recently there has been a lot about gender based violence as well as support for victims of domestic abuse in SA. In 2022 there was a study found that close to 10.000 rapes occur annually in South Africa and 21% of partnered woman have experienced physical and or sexual violence from their partners. Often these victims are left with no remedy, as complicated laws and bureaucracy make it hard to process claims and people sometimes don’t know how to approach the legal system.  That’s where organisations like Lawyers against abuse come in. LvA is a collective of passionate legal professionals and social workers that strive to ensure meaningful access to justice for victims of gender-based violence by providing legal services and psychosocial support, empowering communities and engaging state actors. We’re joined today by Refilwe Ledwaba, one of the legal officers at LvA to talk to us about the work they do, as well as the larger legal landscape WRT gender based violence. Please do follow
