Justice for victims of Gender-Based Violence

Recently there has been a lot about gender based violence as well as support for victims of domestic abuse in SA.

In 2022 there was a study found that close to 10.000 rapes occur annually in South Africa and 21% of partnered woman have experienced physical and or sexual violence from their partners. Often these victims are left with no remedy, as complicated laws and bureaucracy make it hard to process claims and people sometimes don’t know how to approach the legal system.

That’s where organisations like Lawyers against abuse come in. LvA is a collective of passionate legal professionals and social workers that strive to ensure meaningful access to justice for victims of gender-based violence by providing legal services and psychosocial support, empowering communities and engaging state actors. We’re joined today by Refilwe Ledwaba, one of the legal officers at LvA to talk to us about the work they do, as well as the larger legal landscape WRT gender based violence.

Please do follow them on their socials and share their details to anyone you know that might be in need of their help.
