Psychosocial Disability Awareness Month
We spoke to Rene Minnies manager at the Fountain House
facility about Psychosocial Disability Awareness Month. A psychosocial
disability is when a mental illness becomes pervasive and interferes in a
person's functioning, thus preventing them from being able to claim their
rights or to participate in society.
The Fountain House facility is under the umbrella of the
Cape Mental Health. They have programmes that focus on psychosocial rehab
services to enable people with Psychosocial Disability to become inclusive in
society. The other programme deals with work order day that focus on skills
development looking of opportunity for work and family support, hence they do a
lot of advocacy work.
- Some
examples of Psychosocial Disability are, Schizoid disorders such as
schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
- Anxiety
disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress
disorder, agoraphobia and social phobia.
- Mood
disorders such as major and dysthymic depression and bipolar.
