28 November - Health - Nicus promotes PMTCT

In today’s show, we heard from Cornelia Owens – a Dietician from the University of Stellenbosch’s Nutrition Information Centre. On Thursday is the World Aids Day and the World Health Organization has recently updated their recommendations with regard to infant feeding for HIV positive mothers, and new clinical guidelines are being used for the provision of ARVs in the government sector. Remember, HIV positive pregnant women can give birth to health babies if they get the correct treatment. They can also breastfeed their infants with a minimum risk of transmitting the virus to the baby, but it is important that they both receive the correct treatment. Cornelia explained more. For more information you can contact NICUS’s offices on (021) 933 1408 or visit www.sun.ac.za/nicus or send an email to nicus@sun.ac.za alternatively visit your nearest clinic.
