Today we spoke to Mariki Muller – Health Programme Coordinator from Cancer Association of South Africa. We were talking about the dangers of smoking and the World No Tobacco Day. According to the World Health Organisation website tobacco addiction is a global epidemic that is increasingly ravaging countries and regions that can least afford its toll of disability, disease, lost productivity and death. In an effort to fight this, the World No Tobacco Day was created by the World Health Organization in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. Today we spoke to Meaka Biggs– Advocacy Coordinator from Rape Crisis. We were talking about the recent Constitutional Court judgement dealing with the legal definition of rape. According to some gender activists, not extending the definition of rape to include male victims means that the law still determines rape according to gender. Meaka says while they welcome the Constitutional Courts decision to widen the definition of rape to include anal penetration of women and girls, they are disappointed that the definition has not been extended to men. Today we spoke to Cheryl Vermeulen and Ruth Ireland from the Cystic Fibrosis Association. Cystic fibrosis is a relatively common hereditary or genetic disease, which can have a devastating effect on one’s health. Symptoms include excessive mucus production by the cells that line the lungs, the intestine, the sweat glands, the pancreas, the liver and the reproductive tract. The thick, sticky mucus produced by patients suffering from cystic fibrosis can block any one of the ducts in the above mentioned systems, for example it may clog the lungs to such an extent that the patient cannot breathe properly, while the mucus can also damage lung cells. This can lead to constant coughs, wheezing and lung infections like acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia and other respiratory complications. Today we spoke to Meeka Biggs – Advocacy and Lobbying Coordinator at Rape Crisis. They assist rape survivors with free counseling, court support and access to medical help. South Africa has one of the highest rape statistics in the world. According to reports in 1988, a total of 19 308 cases of rape were reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS). In 1994, this figure increased to 42 429 reported cases of rape. In 1996, 50 481 cases of rape were reported to the SAPS. According to the National Institute for Crime Prevention and Rehabilitation (NICRO), the situation is more serious.
