16 May – Gender

Today we spoke to Meaka Biggs– Advocacy Coordinator from Rape Crisis. We were talking about the recent Constitutional Court judgement dealing with the legal definition of rape. According to some gender activists, not extending the definition of rape to include male victims means that the law still determines rape according to gender. Meaka says while they welcome the Constitutional Courts decision to widen the definition of rape to include anal penetration of women and girls, they are disappointed that the definition has not been extended to men. And we also spoke to Mischa Alexander – from Sisters Incorporated. Their aim is to help every women, teenager and child who comes to them in crisis to heal physically, emotionally and spiritually. Mischa is a former resident at Sisters Inc, who managed to change her life and gained financial freedom from the skills training she required at Sisters Incorporated.
