08 May – Human Rights
Today we spoke to Raybin Windvogel – Director for the Western Cape Liquor Board. We were talking about Consumer rights. The 2004 National Consumer Survey found that very few South Africans know what their consumer rights are. According to the National Consumer Forum all consumers have the right to basic goods and services such as adequate food, drinking water, shelter, clothing, health care, electricity and education. These rights lay a foundation for a life of human dignity and therefore give meaning to citizen's rights to vote for the political party of their choice periodically. So if you want more information about consumer rights or want to make a complaint you can contact National Consumer Forum at (012) 428 7071 or 0800 007 081 alternatively visit their website at www.ncf.org.za or you can buy Consumer Fair available at most Absa branches nationwide. Consumer Fair is a tabloid newspaper published quarterly by the National Consumer Forum to advance the interests of consumers in South Africa.
And we also spoke to Zohra Dawood – Executive Director of the Open Society Foundation for South Africa. Our last interview was with Magrieta Ruiters – From the United Sanctuary against Abuse. The organization was started by a group of factory workers at a time when domestic violence was considered a domestic issue which did not warrant police involvement that was in 1994. Members were encouraged to educate themselves around laws pertaining to Human Rights, Domestic Violence Act, Maintenance Act, counseling act. An aggressive awareness campaign was launched. This resulted in more women speaking out and reporting cases of domestic violence. The task of the organization continues to grow one issue opens another e.g. Issues of child neglect, child prostitution and so forth. They are appealing to the members of the public to donate any material like toiletries or clothes for the woman at the shelter.
