28 May – Health

Today we spoke to Mariki Muller – Health Programme Coordinator from Cancer Association of South Africa. We were talking about the dangers of smoking and the World No Tobacco Day. According to the World Health Organisation website tobacco addiction is a global epidemic that is increasingly ravaging countries and regions that can least afford its toll of disability, disease, lost productivity and death. In an effort to fight this, the World No Tobacco Day was created by the World Health Organization in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. And this day is celebrated around the world every year on May 31st. For more Information you can contact the Cancer Association of South Africa at (021) 689 5347 or visit www.cansa.org.za

We also spoke to Phumla Kakaza - a professional nurse at Marie Stopes Clinic. We were talking about contraceptives. There are many different kinds of birth control methods, known as contraceptives and no one contraceptive is right for every person. According to the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, it is important to find out what works best for you. Even if you are not currently having sex, it is always a good idea to think ahead about birth control. Sister Kakaza explained more on which kinds are available here in the country. For more information contact your nearest clinic or your doctor.
