Labour - Mocha Fetoha Training Cooperative to host High Energy Business Mentorship Programme

In today's show, we spoke to Matshepiso Makhabane - Managing Director of Mocha Fetoha Training Cooperative. We were talking about the High Energy Business Mentorship Programme . DOL to host domestic workers’ Public Participation Programme

We closed off with Sindi Ningiza - Provincial organiser for the South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union or SADSAWU in the Western Cape. We were talking about  the Labour imbizo that’s happening this Saturday focusing on domestic workers. Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant will be hosting the first ever domestic workers’ Public Participation Programme that aims to engage them on their rights in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment, Labour Relations as well as the Unemployment Insurance Act. It will also be used to help workers on matters regarding claims for the unemployment insurance fund, compensation fund and worker registration on the department’s Employment Services for South Africa among others. Human Rights - Mitchell’s Plain Advice Office invites community members to their public meeting

In today's show, we spoke to William Simmers - Coordinator of the Mitchell’s Plain Advice Office. We were talking about the upcoming meeting regarding the fight against crime, violence, family violence and substance abuse ahead of the festive season. The Mitchell’s Plain Advice Office is calling on all Western Cape residents who are troubled and concerned about Crime, Violence, Family Violence and Substance Abuse to attend their public meeting next month. The gathering hopes to consult, learn and listen to what others are doing to face these monsters in our society. Khayelitsha Commission to resume next month

We heard from Amanda Dissel - Secretary for the Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of Police Inefficiency and Ineffectiveness in Khayelitsha and a Breakdown in Relations between the Community and the Police. We were talking about their preliminary hearing taking place next month. The commission will hold a preliminary sitting next month with further public sittings during January, February and March 2014 to avoid further setbacks after it was delayed for a year by litigation initiated by the Minister of Police and several other applicants. The preliminary sitting aims to create awareness about the commission and hopes to encourage people to contact the commission if they have any information or experience regarding the police in Khayelitsha. Their office will be open daily until November 29 th , 2013 between 09h00AM and 13h00PM for members of the community to make statements to Commission staff relating to policing in the area. Health - Tomorrow is World Stroke Day

In today's show, we spoke to Anika Barnard - A registered dietician at the Heart and Stroke Foundation to tell us more about who is at risk of having a stroke. This week marks Stroke Week and tomorrow is World Stroke Day. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, stroke is the 3 rd biggest killer in South Africa . The Foundation reiterates that stroke is a very real issue that many people are not aware of because of the belief that it only happens to older people, yet they are increasingly starting to see strokes in younger people too. Tomorrow is World Psoriasis Day

Dr Ilana Steenkamp - Dermatology registrar at Groote Schuur Hospital and long time Psoriasis sufferer Alister Porthen also committee member of the South African Psoriasis Association joined us on the line to tell us more about living with Psoriasis. Tomorrow is also World Psoriasis Day which aims to raise more awareness about this condition. Psoriasis is a non-contagious skin disorder and it affects one to two percent of the population. Unfortunately there is no cure for Psoriasis, but many different treatments, both topical (on the skin) and systemic (throughout the body), can clear psoriasis for periods of time. On Saturday they will be hosting a free concert at the Golden Acre Mall to raise awareness about psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis. October is Mental Health Awareness Month

We closed off with Maleeka Mokallik - Public Relations and Communications Manager for Cape Mental Health. We were  talking about commemorating October as Mental Health Awareness Month. During the course of October, Cape Mental Health raised awareness on the importance of good mental health throughout life since it is reported that depression will be the number two leading cause of disability by 2020 and number one by 2030 with older people just as risk as younger people. The Cape Mental Health's concerns are that mental health problems are one of the leading burdens of disease in South Africa yet only a tiny percentage of annual health budget is directed to mental health. Nants’ingqayi Arts Development presents Bash or be Bashed

Bash or be Bashed is a theatre production that looks at the ways young people conduct themselves in parties and also awareness of some of the things that can easily happen when in a party situation. It is presented by Nants’ingqayi Arts Development. On the 28 th and the 29 th of October 2013 they will be performing at Delft Rent Office in Delft . The performances are scheduled to start at 3PM a nd will cost R20 a ticket. Labour - DOL to host Labour Imbizo for domestic workers

In today's show, we heard from Cebo Kutuka - Assistant Director of the Enforcement and Inspection Services for the Department of Labour to tell us about the outcome of last week’s agricultural blitz and the upcoming Labour Imbizo for domestic workers. The blitz forms part of the department’s national work plan which seeks to address inspections in high risk areas as labour inspectors embarked on a series of inspections to different farms around the province. Last week’s agriculture blitz in Citrusdal , Western Cape focused on checking compliance with Occupational Health and Safety conditions and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. Meanwhile Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant is calling on all workers, work-seekers, unemployed and others to attend a Labour Imbizo that she will be hosting next week Saturday, 2 nd of November at Mandela Park Stadium in Khayelitsha from 10:00AM focusing on domestic workers. Constructive Dismissal: When to resign?

Nashira Abrahams - Dispute Management and Prevention Commissioner at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration or CCMA joined us on the line. We were talking about Constructive Dismissal. Constructive Dismissal is defined in Section 186(e) of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995, as: “ an employee terminated a contract of employment with or without notice because the employer made continued employment intolerable for the employee.” According to Labour experts, it is not for the employer to show that he/she did not introduce any intolerable condition - it is for the employee to show that he/she did. It is important for employees to ensure that they afford the employer a fair opportunity to rectify the “intolerable” situation, before they turn in their resignation and then claim constructive dismissal. It is also very important that employers do not deal with grievance received by employees lightly, and that they actively put in an effort to follow the formal grievance p

Gender - SAPS Men for Change Project tackles gender equality

On Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to Brigadier André Lincoln – From the South African Police Service. He joined us to talk about the SAPS about the Men for Change Project. The SAPS Men for Change, is a network that sought to understand gender equality in order to contribute to the discussions on how men can get involved in building gender equality. Shukumisa Campaign sceptical about the new bill for sexual offences court

Sanja Bornman - An attorney for the Women’s Legal Centre joined us to talk about the Shukumisa Campaign and it’s sceptism about the new bill for sexual offences courts. The Shukumisa campaign is a national coalition of 30 organisations working to combat sexual violence in one form or another, it was established in 2008. Members of the campaign are concerned about the potential of the proposed new bill for sexual offences to make a difference in rape prosecutions. They say the bill fails to address aspects such as ensuring that these courts will actually provide better quality service than ordinary courts which requires commitment to budgets over the long term, standards for quality in place and monitored by the department and parliament. "2 out of every 100 people diagnosed with breast cancer are men" ~ Breast Health Foundation

We closed off with Louise Turner - Chief Operating Officer for the Breast Health Foundation . According to the Breast Health Foundation, Southern Africa has the highest male breast cancer rate in the world as 2 out of every 100 people diagnosed with the disease are men . The Breast Health Foundation was founded in April 2002 and it aims to educate the public on breast cancer, breast health, increase breast cancer awareness and empower women. The foundation believes men do not seek help due to the stigma attached to breast cancer and therefore stresses that awareness and education is crucial because the disease does not discriminate against gender, age or race. Health - Western Cape Government Starts Walking Towards Better Health

Yesterday was World Osteoporosis Day

We also spoke to Tereza Hough – CEO of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Osteoporosis literally means porous bones. It is a condition in which bone tissue is reduced and the micro-architecture of bone is disrupted. This leads to an increased risk of fracture which usually involves the spine, hip or wrist. It is called the silent disease because it progresses undetected for many years and the first sign of this disease is usually a fracture. According to reports, more than one-third of women over the age of 50 and nearly half of those over age 70 are affected by this disease. Osteoporosis in men is on the increase, and one in 5 men will develop this disease. National Down Syndrome Awareness Day - “IT’S ALL IN THE GENES”

We closed off with Tineke Boshoff - from the Down Syndrome Association of the Western Cape. We were talking about Down syndrome. Yesterday it was Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Down syndrome is a genetic condition that causes delays in physical and intellectual development. It is not related to race, nationality, religion or socioeconomic status. The most important fact to know about individuals with Down syndrome is that they are more like others than they are different. Tineke explained more about this condition. Labour - National Skills Authority Secretariat hosts a National Skills Development Conference

Provinces rejects the Traditional Courts Bill

We also heard from Dr Mbongiseni Buthelezi - Senior Researcher at the Rural Women’s Action Research programme at UCT’s Centre for Law and Society. We were talking about the latest development regarding the Traditional Courts Bill. The Traditional Courts Bill was introduced by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in March 2008 on the basis that it would improve “access to justice” by giving proper recognition to the traditional justice system in a manner consistent with values in customary law and the Constitution. But activists objected to the Bill saying it is unconstitutional and should not be passed into law. It is reported that majority of provincial delegations opposed the Traditional Courts Bill but the National Council of Provinces’ Select Committee for Security and Constitutional Development decided to refer the Bill to the provincial legislatures for a third time. Rural Women's Assembly South African Chapter launched

Human Rights - IEC launches School Democracy Week Programme

In today's show, we were joined by Mr Courtney Sampson – IEC’s Provincial Electoral Officer . We were talking about the School Democracy Week Programme. Learners are encouraged to bring their South African, green, bar-coded identity (ID) books or smart-card IDs to school with them during the Schools Democracy Week so that they can register to vote. Those learners who don’t have an ID document are encouraged to apply for one at their nearest Home Affairs office as soon as possible. Mr Sampson said the Schools Democracy Week programme will not disrupt the ordinary business of the schools. Lentegeur Hospital’s Rose Parent Project is looking for Rose Parents
