Today on Sakhisizwe we played an interview I had with Benjamin De Klerk - Tax Payers Service Education Coordinator. We were talking about Employees Tax. What is it and to whom is it payable to. We have the Standard Income Tax on Employees and the Pay As You Earn but the question is how do they differ - Well Pay As You Earn is the employees’ tax that is deducted by the employer from the amount of full-time employment income in excess of the SITE threshold for a year of assessment while the main objective of Standard Income Tax on Employees or SITE is to ensure that the sum of the tax deductions made by the employer is equal to the final income tax (normal tax) liability of the individual for the year of assessment. Today we heard from Salim Patel – Chairman of the Western Cape Rental Housing Tribunal and Simone de Wet – Acting Manager. The Rental Housing Tribunal provides a free service to tenants and landlords in the Western Cape. One of their main objectives is to inform landlords and tenants of their rights and obligations should unfair and unlawful practices arise. We also spoke to Mncedisi Twalo - from the Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign. This is an organisation that helps fight against evictions of families from their homes, water cut-offs and poor health services. Instead they hope to obtain free electricity,secure housing and opposing police brutality. The AEC is currently an umbrella body for more than 15 community organisation, concerned residents and crisis organisations that have come toogether to organise and demand their rights for basic services. Lastly we spoke with Elroy Paulus – from the Black Sash. We were talking about their Rights Education Projects. Black Sash educates and informs individuals and groups of their rights to enable them to take action and access these rights within the area of social protection. Black Sash is currently running the Child Support Grant Campaign and you can support its fight to extend the Child Support Grant to 18 by signing their petition to Finance Minister Trevor Manuel. Today we spoke to Ruth Nugent – a Social Worker from Epilepsy South Africa. We were talking about Epilepsy. It is reported that approximately 65% of people newly diagnosed with epilepsy have no obvious cause. Of the remaining 35%, the more common reasons include stroke, conditions we are born with, brain tumors, trauma and infection but Ruth explained more. We also spoke to Michael. Michael was diagnosed with Schizophrenia few years ago and has been coping very well with this condition. We were talking about Living with Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a serious disorder of the brain that usually appears at a young age (that’s according to experts) and can cause severe disability and loss of function if not treated correctly. Michael shared with us how life has been like for him since being diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Lastly we spoke with Vuyelwa Mehlomakulu – from the Human Sciences Research Council. We were talking about HIV Prevalence Study. It is reported that South Africa is currently the country with the highest infection and transmission rate of HIV/AIDS in the World. In order to gain a better understanding of the perceptions, problems and implications of this epidemic, the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) will be leading the 3rd South African National HIV, Behaviour and Health Survey. The study will reach about 28 000 people in 15 000 randomly selected households from all parts of the country, over a period of about 5-6 months. The study aims to provide information which will inform policy makers about the HIV/AIDS situation in our country, improving and expanding HIV/AIDS programmes and services. In today’s show, we spoke to Heloise Monnet - From the South Africa Education and Environment Project. We spoke about their gap year project. SAEP is an organisation that works with severely under-resourced townships within Cape Town, which consist mostly of families who are recent economic refugees. SAEP runs a Gap Year Project that helps matriculants from these different families and help them by giving them training to either to go study further or gain skills in order to find employment. Today we spoke to Carla Johnson - National Organiser for the Association for Voluntary Sterilisation of South Africa. And last but not least we spoke to Dr Susan Steinman - founder and chairperson of the Workplace Dignity Institute. We were talking about work trauma and how to deal with it. According to experts Trauma isn't the same as being stressed, however it is a specific event that triggers an intense emotional response of helplessness, terror or horror. Symptoms includes flashbacks, persistent anxiety, sleep disturbance, distraction, nervousness and a desire to avoid stimuli associated with the event. Tuesday - Human Rights

Kristin Poulter - A remedial teacher was instudio to talk about a remedial teacher. A remedial teacher therapeutically assists pupils to overcome their specific learning disabilities. Children with specific learning disabilities usually have average or above-average intelligence but cannot cope effectively with certain aspects of school work. These disabilities emerge for example, as an inability to integrate letters into words, reversal of words and numbers, misspelling of words and an inability to do arithmetic. We also heard from Etienne Vlok – from the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union. It has been reported that the clothing and textile industry is battling to survive due to the slow economy. 24 factories closed shop this year leaving more than four thousand workers jobless. Professor Lynette Denny - From the Khayelitsha Cervical Cancer Screening Project also joined us on the line to talk about a new vaccine that has been discovered and is believed that it can prevent cervical cancer. The vaccine is expected to be able to prevent at least 70% of the cases of cervical cancer. It is designed to enhance the immune response and increase the duration of protection against cancer-causing virus types. Cervical Cancer is one of the most common cancers in women in South Africa and particularly prevalent in black women. Professor explained more about this new vaccine. We were talking about the “Restore the Man” Campaign that aims to provide innovative and holistic solutions that promote men’s health. Men’s health is more than ever in the focus of the public discussion. But it needs an even more proactive approach to discuss with men specific health issues. ‘Restore the Man’ encourages healthcare providers, men together with their partners, to recognize that “Male” health issues such as erectile dysfunction and testosterone deficiency syndrome share common underlying conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, abdominal obesity and hypertension. Today we were joined instudio by Cyrille Masso – A pioneer of Cameroonian independent cinema. Cyrille is a guest of this year’s Encounters Film Festival. His film titled The Encounter is about a young Cameroonian young woman who’s got nothing but love for HipHop. This filmmaker has produced numerous fiction films and documentaries, some of which have won prizes at international festivals. We were talking about this film and his involement with the Encounters Film Festival. The film will be screened tonight at 6:15pm at Nu Metro in V&A Waterfront. 02 July - Gender

Today we heard from Noluthando Ntlokwana – An attorney from the Women’s Legal Centre. We were talking about the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act. The Act was passed in 1997 and gives women the option to have an early, legal and safe termination according to their individual beliefs. Before this act, many women died from having illegal “backstreet” abortions. According to the Act, woman or a girl is only able to have an abortion or terminate her pregnancy within the first three months (12 weeks) of her pregnancy but the Act sets out conditions under which a women or girl can have the procedure of this time period. The movement’s mission is to promote and co-ordinate active citizenship through the development of learning communities. They serve as a forum to discuss & implement community development programmes to contribute towards the reduction of unemployment & poverty. And we were also joined on the line by Jeremie Munyabarame -from the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria. We were talking about the 17th African Human Rights Moot Court Competition that is held at the University of Pretoria, from yesterday till July 5th. Students, academics and judges from all over Africa were invited to participate. The Competition aims to prepare a new generation of lawyers to argue cases of alleged human rights violations before the newly established African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which was to become operational sometime this year. The African Human Rights Moot Court Competition is said to be unique in giving the youngest and the brightest future African lawyers the opportunity to critically examine the human rights situation on the continent, with a view to improving it through the use of the persuasive tactics of logical legal argument based on the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.
