09 July - Gender

Today we heard from Rachel Petersen – from the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children. The centre helps women and children from abusive homes by offering them safe accommodation, legal help and job skills training. The organisation also provides on-site counselling and economic empowerment. For more information about the services that they provide contact their offices on (021) 633 5287 or go to www.saartjiebaartmancentre.org.za

And we also spoke to Melanie. We were talking about Polyamory. Polyamory means having more than one loving person in your life at the same time. It is reported that polyamorous relationships might or might not be sexual, but they are loving. They are more about freedom of choice in loving relationships. Melanie is in a polyamorous relationship and she shared with us the disadvantages and advantages of being a poly. For more information go to www.polyamory.co.za

We closed off the show with an interview with Liezel van Schalkwyk – from Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust. Rape Crisis’s training and public awareness programme has an active and important role in creating awareness around gender-based violence and rape. The advocacy and lobbying programme work aggressively to make changes in the legislation and policy around sexual violence.
