26 April – Labour

Today we spoke to Dr Mzukisi Qobo – a Research Fellow with the University of Stellenbosch’s Politics Department. He is also an Entrepreneur and Motivational Speaker. We were talking about Entrepreneurship. Young people are facing the problem of unemployment which makes them vulnerable to social ills like crime and drugs but Dr Qobo says there is a growing appetite among a section of youth to play a more meaningful role in society through entrepreneurship development. Today we spoke to Ingrid Le Roux – a Medical Doctor. We were talking about the Philani Nutrition and Development Project. The project was established in the “illegal” squatter community of Crossroads in 1979 to provide basic child health and nutrition services to a community ignored and neglected by the health authorities of the apartheid era. It now operates in nine communities in Cape Town. They also provide income generating programmes for the women in those communities. Today we spoke to Patricia Kama – Principal at the Noluthando Pre-School. The children from Noluthando visited the Khayelitsha Magistrate Court last week to learn more about their rights. Mrs Kama says “children should know about the law and their rights. And we also spoke to Siviwe Minyi from the Department of Community Safety. We were talking about the Hands Off Our Children Campaign .The campaign was launched in March 2002 to help deal with child abuse in the Western Cape. The Campaign works with communities to raise awareness about child abuse develop prevention strategies and assist victims. HOOC sees child abuse as a complex problem that needs to be addressed from different angles by everyone in society. In today's show we played an interview I had with Jimmy Wales earlier today. Jimmy is the founder of Wikipedia - a free web-based encyclopedia and is in the country to attend Africa's first Digital Freedom Expo to be held at the University of the Western Cape, today and tomorrow. The expo aims to promote the use of free software and free or open content, including showcasing the business opportunities created by free operating systems, applications and tools. Today we spoke to Erika ketterer - A dietician from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa. We were talking about stroke. A stroke or brain attack occurs when a blood vessel supplying oxygen and nutrients to the brain either bursts or becomes clogged with a blood clot. A build up of fatty material in the walls of arteries causes gradual narrowing of these arteries. The Simelela rape survivors centre is a response to the high degree of sexual violence against women and children in South African townships. Simelela provides medical care and psychosocial support and has integrated with other service providers to offer forensic examination and police assistance to rape survivors.
