24 April – Human Rights

Today we spoke to Patricia Kama – Principal at the Noluthando Pre-School. The children from Noluthando visited the Khayelitsha Magistrate Court last week to learn more about their rights. Mrs Kama says “children should know about the law and their rights.

And we also spoke to Siviwe Minyi from the Department of Community Safety. We were talking about the Hands Off Our Children Campaign .The campaign was launched in March 2002 to help deal with child abuse in the Western Cape. The Campaign works with communities to raise awareness about child abuse develop prevention strategies and assist victims. HOOC sees child abuse as a complex problem that needs to be addressed from different angles by everyone in society. Our last interview was with Marcus Moloeli from the Umsobomvu Youth Fund. We were talking about the Global Youth Service Week. The Global Youth Service Week is an annual event held on a designated weekend every April which celebrates the year-round contributions young people make to their communities and world through voluntary service. To mark the event more than ten thousand young people from the Western Cape will undertake safety and security activities in 130 schools, 45 railway stations, and 15 community patrols.
