Cape Town Station and Somerset West Alpha clinic have partnered with the department of Health to offer free health testing services to both the insured and uninsured members of the community. Patients will be seen by a trained nurse, who will provide the following services; measure blood pressure, ascertain Body Mass Index ( BMI ), screen cholesterol, check blood glucose and assess the patient’s HIV and TB status. The tests, which normally cost in the region of R250, are available to all South African citizens for an administrative fee of R50. Testing is free on Wednesdays from 08h30-16h30 at Alpha Clinic Somerset West and from 09h00-12h00 at Alpha Clinic Cape Town Station. Jo-Anne Otto - Western Cape Government Health Communications Officer. As from the 10 th of March till the 11 th of April 2014, Western Cape Government Health will have professional teams traveling from school to school to vaccinate all girls in Grade 4 who are nine years and older and who attend a public or special school against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Human Pampilomavirus is the virus that causes Cervical Cancer, the vaccination protects the girl from being infected by HPV and thus reduces the risk of developing HPV related cervical cancer later in life. Cervical Cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women after Breast Cancer. Parents and guardians should remember that vaccination is their choice and thus need to sign a consent form if they wish their daughter to be vaccinated. In today's show, we spoke to Carla White - V&A Waterfront Communications Manager. Tomorrow, the V&A Waterfront in conjunction with the World Wildlife Fund and the City of Cape Town will host an evening of education, awareness and entertainment to celebrate Earth Hour. From 8:30pm sharp, all non-essential lights at the V&A Waterfront will be turned off and the audience will enjoy a candlelight performance by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. We have seen a spate of strike actions in the country but the question is what contributes to the increase of industrial action and last year economists blamed the widespread industrial strife for the slowdown of South Africa ’s economic growth. On Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to Nceba kazi Qupe – From the Treatment Action Campaign. On Thursday TAC members will be marching to Khayelitsha District Hospital in order to demonstrate its dissatisfaction with the hospital’s service delivery. The organisation claims that in August of 2013, the Treatment Action Campaign handed over a memorandum to Khayelitsha hospital about the poor experiences of community members at the hospital. After the MEC inspected the hospital, he found no problems. However, problems have continued to arise, and the people of Khayelitsha are unhappy with the response of the hospital and the MEC. The march will take place on Thursday, the 27 th of March 2014, at 10h00AM until 13h00PM.Nceba kazi said the goal of this demonstration is to demand an improvement in the quality of treatment and care for the people of Khayelitsha. On Saturday March 22 nd was the Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Day. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition characterized by inflammation of the peripheral joints of the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees and feet, usually on both sides of the body, potentially resulting in damage. Damage is caused by persistent inflammation of the synovium, the membrane lining the joint, with subsequent damage of the cartilage, bone erosion and joint deformities.   It is reported that about one per cent of the population is affected, by Rheumatoid Arthritis although in South Africa there are no accurate prevalence figures. In today's show, we spoke to Vuyo Lufele – National Union of Metalworkers Regional Secretary. Yesterday the union embarked on a national strike to highlight the issue of youth unemployment. According to the union, after Greece and Spain , South Africa has the third highest unemployment rate in the world for people between the ages of 15 to 24. It further states that about 71% of all unemployed people in South Africa are between the ages 15-29. Most of them are women; the majority of which have never had a job in their lives. According to Cape Metrorail, infrastructural problems over this past weekend have led to the temporary closure of platforms 11-18 at Cape Town Station while technicians work to restore functionality. The annual competition provides South African high school learners and university students the opportunity to explore the world of investing by trading JSE listed shares through a virtual portfolio.
