In today's show, we spoke to Theuns Botha - Western Cape Health MEC. We were talking about the phased closure of GF Jooste Hospital and the commissioning of Mitchell’s Plain Hospital . Last Friday, GF Jooste Hospital’s surgical admissions and orthopaedic theatre relocated to Mitchell’s Plain Hospital . The majority of GF Jooste hospital staff has been transferred to Mitchell’s Plain hospital. The final closing of GF Jooste Hospital is expected to be in April next year when the hospital’s emergency centre plus a 30-bed overnight ward will move to the back of the Heideveld Community Development Centre.

Gift & Busi In today's show, we heard from Gift Gwe - Beat Around the Bosch event ambassador. Beat around the Bosch is a race, with live music stages and a festival at the end. It is said to be a first time event that will take place in Stellenbosch, and will create a new and unique approach to road running. Devin and Chris launched the platform to offer better ways of connecting people to their city’s public transport systems. Thabisa & Leonard In today's show, we spoke to Thabisa Ngada and Leonard Macakathi - Western Cape Education Officer for the Commission for Gender Equality. We were focusing on the LGBTI Rights. The CGE feels that LGBTI issues are not addressed properly. According to the Institution, there is no adequate education awareness and this particularly caused by autocratic styles of religious and traditional communities. Government should design programmes in schools that will raise awareness about these rights. CGE has realized that communities regard awareness of LGBT rights as promotion. They accuse structures like the Commission for gender Equality as structures that promote Gays and lesbian practices as opposed to promoting respect for rights of Gays and Lesbians. Dr Bronwen Hendricks – from the Khayelitsha Cervical Cancer Screening Project joined on the show today. The Project is based at two different clinics in Khayelitsha, Site B Day Hospital and Michael Mapongwana Day Hospital . We were discussing cervical cancer and the importance of pap smears since September is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Cervical cancer is said to be the most common cancer among South African women and accounts for 18.5% of all cancers in women in this country. About 1,500 women die to cervical cancer every year. Hence it is important for women to go for a pap smear to know their status and to detect the cancer early. The health department has developed a policy that every woman should take a free pap smear once every ten (10) years in her lifetime from age 30 years onwards. The health department aims to screen at least 70% of women in the target age group to reduce morbidity and mortality by 60%, so to all the women make sure you go for a pap smear it...

In today's show, we spoke to Liesl Theron – Founder and Director at Gender Dynamix. Gender DynamiX is the first and currently, the only African based organisation for the transgender community. The aim is to create awareness and visualize transgenderism. Gender DynamiX, in collaboration with the Legal Resources Centre, is conducting a survey into the experiences of transgendered persons in accessing public toilets. Yesterday was World Lymphoma Awareness Day and it is reported that over one million people worldwide live with lymphoma, and over 1000 people are diagnosed with this cancer every day, yet it is still misunderstood and misdiagnosed.  I am the voice of Lymphoma is a collaborative initiative between a number of local organisations, including CHOC, The Sunflower Fund, The Faces of Hope Foundation, Campaigning for Cancer, the KZN Lymphoma Support Group and Roche, with the support of the Lymphoma Coalition, the global body responsible for World Lymphoma Awareness Day. Professor Anthony Meyers - Specialist Nephrologist and Chairman of the National Kidney Foundation of South Africa joined us on the line to tell us more about kidney disease and commemorating Kidney Awareness Week which was last week. The campaign is aimed at raising awareness about kidneys and, more importantly, ways to reduce the risk of kidney disease. According to medical experts, kidney disease is often ‘silent’, having few symptoms especially in the early stages. If left unchecked, the disease can progress or lead to kidney failure. If detected early, appropriate treatment can help delay or even prevent end-stage kidney failure. Professor Meyers explained more. Jill Robson - Regional director of Alzheimer’s SA in the Western Cape was Instudio to tell us more about Alzheimer’s disease. September is World Alzheimer’s Month. Statistics show that a lzheimer’s disease affects one in 20 people over the age of 65 and one in 5 people over the age of 80. This means that 20% of people over the age of 80 develop dementia which by implication means that 80% do not. There are however diagnosed and documented cases of early–onset dementia before the age of 65. Symptoms may include loss of memory, difficulty in finding the right words or understanding what people are saying, difficulty in performing previously routine tasks, personality and mood changes. Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of ageing and knows no social, economic, ethnic or geographical boundaries. In today's show, we spoke to Mr Michael Bagraim - Chairman of the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry Human Resources Portfolio Committee. The Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry says that service station forecourt workers could be the main victims of their own strike as many service stations in South Africa are already equipped with till points where customers could pay after serving themselves . Filling station workers represented by NUMSA downed tools at the beginning of this week demanding better wages. The Union is demanding a double digit pay hike, while employers are offering only seven percent.
