Molo Songololo, protecting the rights of all chidren
Molo Songololo is an organisation that works with and
for children to promote their rights, care and protection, as well as their
participation in public decision-making. They motivate and empower
children/youth on human rights and especially the rights of the children.
We spoke to the director, Patric Solomons, who told us
about how the new law, WESTERN CAPE COMMISSIONER FOR
CHILDREN’S ACT, 2019, is important. Having a commissioner is very important
because the commissioner will be able to oversee how government is implementing
children’s rights and what our communities are doing to protect and improve the
lives of children.
The
commissioner will also be able to see how the children’s rights are being
violated.
The
organization promotes children participation,
which is why on Friday 20 July they will be having a children’s forum, Have
Your Say Children’s Consultation. This will consist of 200 children from around
the province who will come together to discuss the act and the role of the
commissioner.
Molo
Songololo believes that it is best to consult with children, listen to them and
consider their opinions. That participation must be appropriate – it must be
child friendly.
The
organization focuses on teaching children about their rights and believes that
the educational system can definitely improve on how they educate children
about these rights.
He
highlighted on how there is also conflict because the very people that are
supposed to teach children’s rights have an issue with children’s rights. Many
of them do not believe that children have the right to speak up, ask questions
and engage. They get very uncomfortable when children express themselves.
These
teachers think that children need to respect them no matter how they treat the
children. Yes, there are factors that can increase the educator’s stress, but
that is not an excuse to take it out on the children.
That
is why Molo Songololo teaches children their rights and responsibilities and
make them feel like their opinion matters.
