Wednesday - Gender - Mbali Matandela


Mbali Matandela who was part of the 9 women out of the 23 students that were arrested during the protest weeks ago for ‪#‎FeeMustFall campaign. They then appeared at the Wynberg Magistrate Court on the 28th October 2015 and fortunately all charges were dropped.

Mbali Matandela is a Gender and Transformation Honours student and a black feminist activist. She pursues her gender activism on various platforms, such as The African Gender Institute’s Young Women’s Leadership Program and the Rhodes Must Fall Movement. Her writing centres on the experience of black women in South Africa, therefore her writing both within and outside of the academia seeks to empower women through different forms of expression – written, oral and visual. Thus far, she has written for the Mail and Guardian and she is a contributing writer and poet for the Rhodes Must Fall Writing Sub-committee.
