Monday - Health - Be a blood donor!

On today's show i spoke to Marlize Marton Van Der Merwe from WP Blood Transfusion Service.

The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service is a non-profit, independent organisation operating throughout the Western Cape. We work without prejudice to supply safe blood and blood products to all communities in the region, from Cape Town all the way up to George. It’s our goal to be the benchmark transfusion service in South Africa – and we’re getting there, with the help of our dedicated donors.  Our donors and recipients are our first priority. We use only the latest technology and research to ensure their safety, and to excel in the science of transfusion. Each year we collect more than 165 000 units (that’s over 78 million litres!) of safe blood that’s used to impact the lives of more than 490 000 people. Quite a feat, even if we do say so ourselves.

Marlize also added that they are in great need of blood donors and that if anyone would like to be a blood donor , you will have to be between the ages of 16 -65 and your health needs to be your first priority. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
