Labour - Cape Craft & Design Institute to host 3rd Creative Economy Conference 2013

On the show today, we spoke to Marjorie Naidoo - Cape Craft and Design Institute communications manager. The Cape Craft & Design Institute was set up in 2001 to promote and grow craft as an economic sector in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Their mission is to develop people to build profitable enterprises, with marketable products for global markets in an enabled environment. We were talking about the free programmes, workshops and other support the CCDI offers for Western Cape craft producers and the African Creative Economy Conference they are hosting later in the year. The CCDI has won a bid to host the 3rd Creative Economy Conference 2013 and the 4th Arterial Network Biennial Conference in October 2013. The Conference aims to focus attention on the continent’s creative industries not just as economic drivers, but also to highlight their potential contribution to the eradication of poverty, to democracy and to human rights. There will be a parallel programme of African dance, film, fashion, and more. Cultural practitioners and organisations that could contribute to the range of parallel programmes are asked to submit their interest by the end of April.
