March 22nd is the Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Day

We closed off with Professor Asgar Kalla - Head of the Rheumatology Department at UCT’s Department of Medicine. He was speaking to us about managing Rheumatoid Arthritis. On Friday, March 22nd is the Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Day. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition characterized by inflammation of the peripheral joints of the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees and feet, usually on both sides of the body, potentially resulting in damage. Damage is caused by persistent inflammation of the synovium, the membrane lining the joint, with subsequent damage of the cartilage, bone erosion and joint deformities. It is reported that about one per cent of the population is affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis although in South Africa there are no accurate prevalence figures. Women are affected about two to three times more often than men. The incidence increases with age difference. Rheumatoid arthritis is seen around the world and all races are affected. 800 million people around the world are living with obesity.

  4th of March is observed as World Obesity Day and we spoke to CEO Professor Pamela Naidoo and Dietitian Kinza Hussian from The Heart and Stroke Foundation.  So according to the World Obesity Federation, 800 million people around the world are living with obesity. And then also in South Africa almost 65% of women and 30% of men are classified as being overweight or obese. Child Protection Week is an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness about the rights and well-being of children.
