Arts, Culture & Environment - The Chaeli Campaign DisABILITY Dreams Short story competition calls for entries

In today's show, we were joined by Jared Kruger – Project Co-ordinator at the Chaeli Campaign. We were talking about the DisABILITY Dreams Short story competition that they running. Through this competition, writers are encouraged to create stories challenging current understandings, and misunderstandings, of disability in South Africa. The deadline for submission is 22nd of March 2013 and entry is free. Stories can be in English, Afrikaans or Xhosa and must be 600 words or less and be the previously unpublished exclusive work of the entrant. They also running the Art and Poetry Competition and the closing date for this competition is 10th of May. Entries can be emailed to jared@chaelicampaign.co.za or sent to The Chaeli Cottage, 18 Culm Road, Plumstead 7800 Cape Town. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
