We closed off with Dr Michael Harrison - Head of Department for Paediatrics and Child
Health at Groote Schuur Hospital. We were talking about
Preterm births in South Africa . November 17th
marked the World Prematurity Day. It is estimated 1that 5 million babies are born preterm
every year or before the 37 weeks of pregnancy have been completed, and of
which 1.1 million preterm babies die each year. The Day is marked with events
and activities to bring attention to the global challenge of preterm birth
which is the leading cause of neonatal mortality and the number two cause of
child mortality worldwide. Common causes of preterm birth includes multiple
pregnancies, infections and chronic conditions, such as diabetes and high blood
pressure; however, often no cause is identified. Many survivors face a lifetime
of disability, including learning disabilities and visual and hearing problems.
To reduce preterm birth rates, women especially adolescents need better access
to family planning and increased empowerment, as well as improved care before,
between and during pregnancies. For more information visit www.facebook.com/WorldPrematurityDay
