This week is Physiotherapy Back Week

We heard from Tanya Green - a physiotherapist at Stellenbosch University Sport Performance Institute. We were talking about the Physiotherapy Back Week. This is an initiative by the South African Society of Physiotherapy that aims to raise awareness of the back and how to manage back pain for overall health at work, at home and at play. According to the Stellenbosch University Sport Performance Institute, 75% to 85% of all people over age 30 will experience back problems at some point in their lives. Besides maintaining a health weight and exercising regularly, physiotherapists also encourage people to remembering to sit or stand with the correct posture as one should avoid slumping or standing with hunched shoulders and bend their legs and keep their back straight when lifting something. In support of the week, SUSPI’s Physiotherapy unit is offering free back assessments during the month of September to individuals who might either be suffering from back pain or who want advice and guidance on how to prevent injuring their backs in the future. For further information or to book a session you can contact the unit on (021) 808 3393/5 or (021) 808 9109 or send an email to sportmed@suspi.ac.za or alternatively visit www.suspi.co.za
