Correctional Services spokesperson explains how sentence remissions will work

We also heard from Regan Jules-Macquet - Project Manager for NICRO and Sonwabo Mbananga - Spokesperson for Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to discuss the proposed six-month blanket reduction in sentence for all prisoners, parolees and probationers, and an extra 12-month remission for offenders convicted of non-violent crimes as announced by President Jacob Zuma on Freedom Day. It was stated that “NICRO is concerned about the many sentenced prisoners released without any regard for preparation for release, nor their progress with regard to rehabilitation” in a press release issued in response to the President’s announcement. It stated that sentenced offenders have been found guilty and they should serve their full sentence as given by the court because remission gives unearned 'rewards' to offenders which are not in any way available to the victims.  NICRO offers a professional service at 45 magistrate’s courts in the country whereby the courts are assisted in implementing a non custodial sentence in appropriate cases. NICRO considers this approach a much more sustainable way of reducing crime in our country and of securing our hard won democratic and constitutional freedoms.
