03 April - Human Rights - SJC challenges the City's Janitorial Service

In today’s show, we spoke to Axolile Notywala - Junior Researcher for the Social Justice Coalition (SJC). He was telling us more about their formal submission to the City of Cape Town regarding a New Janitorial Service that could improve Sanitation Conditions for more than 350 000 people in Cape Town’s Informal Settlements. They say the City's Commitment could signal major shift in Cape Town's Sanitation Policy & Influence Sanitation Provision Nationally. Unfortunately Shehaam Sims Mayco member for Utility Services was not available to join us but have confirmed that they received the submission and will take action in due course. It outlines the need for a new service to maintain more than 13 700 permanent flush toilets in the City’s informal settlements servicing at least 350 000 residents since in many of these communities one toilet stall can be shared between a hundred households, yet they currently receive no routine maintenance from the City. The SJC has proposed that the new service includes Cleaning and sanitizing of toilets, standpipes and surrounding areas, basic plumbing and handiwork to repair minor faults and enclosures, stocking of toilets with amenities such as soap and monitoring conditions and reporting faults to the relevant department.
