13 July - Gender - Guests share pressures and anxieties of coming out

On Sakhisizwe today, we were joined by Marlow Valentine-Newman - Deputy Director of the Triangle Project. Marlow brought along Eugene Mathews and Javin Jagers , who shared their experience of coming out as gay men. According to the Triangle Project, local and international statistics show that lesbian, gay or bisexual adolescents questioning their sexuality are 4 times more likely to attempt to commit suicide due to the anxiety and pressure they feel from society. Furthermore stigma, homophobia and discrimination may unfortunately continue to be present in a young gay, lesbian or bisexual person’s life. For more information about Triangle Project you can contact (021) 448 3812 or send an email to admin@triangle.org.za they also have a Helpline number on (021) 712 6699 between 1pm to 9pm daily.
