Obesity is becoming a major problem in SA

We also heard from Lyle Barreiro – A Biokineticist from the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. We were talking about being overweight and obesity. The World Health Organisation defines being overweight and obesity as “abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health”. Being overweight and obesity are serious risk factors for various chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. The WHO has acknowledged that what was previously only considered a problem in high income countries, overweight and obesity are now increasing significantly in low- and middle-income countries, especially in urban settings.
