Thursday marks the Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Day

We also spoke to Dr David Gotlieb – a Rheumatologist. We were talking about Rheumatoid Arthritis. On Thursday is the Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Day. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition characterized by inflammation of the peripheral joints of the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees and feet, usually on both sides of the body, potentially resulting in damage. It is reported that about one per cent of the population is affected, by Rheumatoid Arthritis although in South Africa there are no accurate prevalence figures. Women are affected about two to three times more often than men. The incidence increases with age difference. Rheumatoid arthritis is seen around the world and all races are affected. For more information about Rheumatoid arthritis you can contact your nearest health care center, alternatively visit www.arthritis.co.za
