18 March - Labour - DWDE presents Ukwakhana School Uniform Design Competition

In today’s show, we spoke to Underé Deglon - chief executive Officer for the Disability Workshop Development Enterprise. We were talking about the Ukwakhana School Uniform Design Competition. The competition is runned as part of our ongoing efforts to realize the Millennium Development Goals towards the empowerment of people with disabilities and is opened to designers in the Western Cape Province who have a passion for community development. The first place winner will receive the UKWAKHANA SCHOOL UNIFORM DESIGN COMPETITION AWARD 2010, with cash prize of R10 000, and an internship contract for 12 months at the Ukwakhana Sewing Co-operative. Second prize winner will receive R2500, and Third prize winner will receive R1500. Entries must be received by April 14, 2010, before or at 13:00 pm (strictly adhere to the entry deadline). Incomplete entry forms or used incorrect forms will not be considered. Entry forms can be collected at DWDE offices during office hours (Mondays – Fridays 09h00 – 15h00). Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
