06 August - Labour - Another mineworker dies!!!

Today we heard from Lesiba Seshoka – spokesperson for the National Union of Mineworkers. We were talking about workers’ safety. One mine worker died yesterday and five others were injured when a platform on which workers were both working on collapsed. The mine is a Vametco vanadium mine owned by the Strategic Minerals Coporation, located just outside Brits in the North Western Province. It it reported that South Africa has the world’s deepest mines and one of the highest rates of work related mine deaths. A safety audit earlier this year stated that mind safety compliance in South Africa was below target at 66%. In 2008, 168 mining deaths were reported and in just this July 9 workers tragically died when the ground fell in a Rustenburg mine. Lesiba explained more on workers’ safety.
