On today’s show, we heard from Madge Gibson – a Partner at Jack Hammer Executive Headhunters. According to an article in this week’s Career Times, even though women constitute 52% of South Africa’s adult population, they make up only 41% of the working population. The article further states that gender representation in state-owned enterprises is better compared to listed companies. Madge’s firm statistics shows that over the past three years, only one in three new positions was being filled by women. Madge explained more about contributing factors and the way forward. Lastly we heard from Laurence Mitchell – from the Cape Film Commission. We were talking about the Animation Industry Development Initiative. The Cape Film Commission and the film industry in the Western Cape Province have committed themselves to create a strong animation and new media industry and they have pledged their support to help facilitate the creation of 10 000 jobs by 2020 within the Animation Industry. The first of several community Awareness Workshops commenced on the 17th March. Laurence explained more about the workshops. The workshops will specifically target candidates from Previously Disadvantaged communities who can demonstrate a command of the English language, is computer literate, have some form of Art, Drawing and Design (Visual Literacy) skills, and those that have Mathematical Literacy and possess Creative and Storytelling abilities. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
