We heard from Lezete Engelbrecht – Home Care Director at the Highway Home Project. This is an organisation that offers care to abandoned, abused and neglected children, who are referred to them by welfare agencies and some who have been on the street. Their mission is to provide a safe residential care facility, offering opportunities for the healthy development of children, combined with effective community service and family support programmes, contributing to family reconciliation, reunification and preservation. And our last interview was with Deputy Mayor Councillor Grant Haskin and Sandra Morreira – Director of the Homestead the first shelter for street children in Cape Town. The City Of Cape Town will host street people conference in conjunction with Western Cape Provincial Government on the 30th and 31st of October. The conference will be assessing whether the City’s efforts and resources are being used effectively and efficiently in improving the quality of life of people in this marginalised and stigmatised group. Sandra shared some of the challenges they face as service providers. The conference will be at Good Hope Centre.
