23 October - Labour
In today’s show, we played an interview I had with George Pambason - Director of the Alliance for refugees. The alliance was established in 2005 by George and other refugees from different African countries living in Cape Town, with a shared vision of uplifting the lives of refugees and making them an asset rather than a liability to the host Nation by engaging them in socio-economic and cultural activities. If you want more information contact the Alliance on (021) 421 2348 or visit www.afrisa.org.za
We also heard from John Peters – Regional Manager for Small Enterprise Development Agency or SEDA. We were talking about Entrepreneurship. SEDA in partnership with the Department of Trade & Industry hosted the first Entrepreneurs Day in Cape Town yesterday. The aim of the event is to reach mainly pre-start up as well as existing enterprises that have been in operation for less than two years, providing information, advice and networking opportunities. John explained more about the future of entrepreneurship in our province. For more information about the services that SEDA provides call (021) 949 2227 or visit www.seda.org.za
Our last interview was with Nerine Kahn -Director of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration or CCMA. The CCMA is hosting a conference on the International Perspectives about Workplace Dispute Resolution. This event will bring together Agency Heads of similar Dispute Resolution Agencies from Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, USA, Canada and New Zealand. The CCMA believes that this conference is pivotal in understanding the challenges for promoting labour market stability, not only in South Africa but in the SADC Region at large. This conference is also a key platform for people with a passion for industrial relations to learn and debate employee relations concerns affecting stakeholders world-wide. Nerine explained more about some of the focal areas that were addressing during the conference. For more information about the CCMA go to www.ccma.org.za or their call centre on 0861 16 16 16.
