14 October - Human Rights

In today’s show, we were joined by Ashraaf Cassiem and Evelyn Mokoena - from the Western Cape Anti- Eviction Campaign. Two weeks ago an incident took place at a home in Symphony way where it is alleged that about 15 police officers illegally invaded a resident’s home, destroying the property in the process. According to the Anti-Eviction Campaign, the officers were unable to provide a copy of a court order or proof of permission from the City. We spoke discussed the incident in depth. We were also joined on the line by Steve Hayward - Project Manager for the City of Cape Town's Informal Settlement Management to tell us their side of the story. If you want more information about the Anti-Eviction Campaign, you can contact Ashraf on 076 186 1408.

We heard from Nikki Arendse - from the National Institute for crime prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders or NICRO. This national non-profit organisation regards crime as a threat to democracy and individual rights. Through people centered development and services to victims, offenders and communities, NICRO strengthens a human rights culture and a safer South Africa. The organisation aims to build and strengthen a democratic society, based on human rights principles through crime prevention and development. We spoke about the diversion programs run to make it possible for troubled teens to be reintegrated into society. Our last interview was with Braam Hanekom – from the Human Rights group PASSOP. PASSOP says Western Cape Premiere Lynne Brown needs to prioritise speeding up service delivery at the Cape Town refugee centre. The organisation says service delivery at the centre has still not improved, claiming this is only upsetting the foreigners more. We also heard from Dr Hildegarde Fast – head of Provincial Disaster Management about what steps is the provincial government taking in dealing with the issue of refugees. For more information on PASSOP you can go to www.passop.co.za or contact Braam on 084 256 1140.
