In today’s show, we spoke to Dr Ziskend – An Ophthalmologist from the University of Stellenboch. This week is the Eye Care Awareness Week and annually during this period eye specialists normally perform free cataract operations as part of an annual nationwide programme to restore the sight of people suffering from cataracts. Last year the attention was on the prevention of childhood blindness in support of the World Sight Day that is on Saturday the 11th of October. Dr Ziskend explained more on what measures we can take in order to prevent eye infections that can lead to permanent Blindness. Visit the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa’s website at www.ossa.co.za for more information on eye diseases and conditions and to find an ophthalmologist in your area.

We heard from Professor Dennis Viljoen – from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Stellenbosch. We spoke about Inherited Disorders. Last week Wednesday the 1st of October was the National Inherited Disorders Day and the theme was “Know about Birth Defects”, so Professor Viljoen will explain more about Birth Defects and on whether they are preventable or not. That interview was brought to you by the National Department of Health and funded by the European Union.

We also spoke to Megan Pentz_Kluyts – a nutritionist will be joining us on the line to talk about Nutrition. From the 9th – 13th of October is the Nutrition Awareness Week. According to the National Food Consumption Survey released last week, South African children suffer from stunted growth as a result of malnutrition while 10 percent of all youngsters across the country can be classified as overweight. Last year’s theme was “The Right to Food”. Megan told us more about the nutrients that play an important role in the health and well-being of the people especially pregnant mothers and the unborn babies. For more information on nutrition you can contact your nearest health centre.

We closed off the show with an interview with Julie Martin - Western Cape branch and education Manager at the Arthritis Foundation of South Africa. The 12 October marks international arthritis awareness day and seeing as many people are unaware of the details about the disease, we though it best to call in the experts to talk to us about arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation of South Africa aims to help those suffering from arthritis to achieve a better life by providing education and offering support. The Arthritis Foundation of South Africa is the only body in our country providing non-medical support for arthritis patients, their families and carers. We spoke about Arthritis.
