Today we had an interview with Michelle May from the Cancer Association of South Africa who told us a bit more about Prostate and testicular cancer. It is reported that more than 96% of testicular cancers can be cured if caught at an early stage. Even when the tumour spreads, the cure rate is over 80%.Treatment may be very intensive, but most patients cured will have no long-term side effects from the treatment but Michelle explained more. For more information contact the Cancer Association of South Africa on 021 689 5347 or visit www.cansa.org.za. Today is the last day for the Men’s Health Month, created to raise awareness around men’s health. That Interview was brought to you by the National Department of Health and Funded by the European Union.

We were also joined on the line by Zetta Scheisser from Retina South Africa who spoke to us about Retinitis Pigmentosa and Macular Degeneration. Retinitis Pigmentosa is the name given to a group of hereditary diseases of the retina of the eye. The retina is a delicate layer of cells which picks up the pictures and sends them to the brain. Zetta explained more on it and whether it is common amongst South Africans. For more information contact Retina South Africa on (021) 911 0340 or 082 423 9948. Visit their website on www.rpsa.org.za.

We closed off the show with an interview I had earlier today with Dr Chris Verster who is a Psychiatrist from Stikland Hospital. We looked at Borderline Personality Disorder. According to experts, Borderline sufferers have extreme and long standing instability in their emotional lives, as well as in their behaviour and their self-image. Dr Verster will explain more about the symptoms and whether it is a treatable condition or not. For more information visit the South African Society of Psychiatrists on www.sasop.co.za or the Mental Health Information Centre, on (021) 938 9229.
