17 June - Human Rights

Today we heard from Antonet Langa – from the Novalis Ubuntu Institute. The Institute was founded to make a creative contribution to the educational, social and cultural problems of our time. Up to now the Institute has developed and delivered a wide range of innovative educational and social programs in KwaZulu Natal, Gauteng and the Western Cape. Antonet explained more about those programs and whether they have been effective or not. For more information you can contact their offices on (021) 797 1857 or go to www.novalis.org.za.

And we were also joined on the line by Paul Roux – Chairperson of the Kidzpositive Family Fund. The Kidzpositive Family Fund is dedicated to improving the health of HIV-positive children in Southern Africa. Their goal is to generate funds for the grassroots support of mothers and children affected by HIV/AIDS. Paul explained more about their projects and how one can contribute to the fund in order for them to continue funding organisations that provide care for significant numbers of affected families. For more information you can contact their offices on (021) 686 9710 or visit www.kidzpositive.org

We closed off the show with an interview with Rose Damon - Deputy Head at EDULIS. We were talking about the Mobile Library Project. The project has changed the way learners in schools in the rural areas of the Breede River/Overberg, South Cape/Karoo and the West Coast/Winelands districts view education. Through this project, a culture of reading has been developed amongst learners, which has assisted them with their school projects and enables them to read to their illiterate parents, enhancing their quality of life. Rose shared with us how this has enhanced communication skills between parents and learners. For more information contact her on (021) 957 9626 or send an email to rdamon@pgwc.gov.za
