Today on our weekly Labour slot we spoke to Jan Truter who us a labour law specialist from Labourwise. He spoke to us about a new legislation to crack down on child molesters – meaning that the employment of certain sex offenders will soon be strongly regulated. This new legislation will, under certain circumstances, prohibit certain employers from hiring or continuing to employ sex offenders. Discussing the believed staff crisis at the Western Cape police 10111 emergency call centre was Superintendent Riaan Pool. Claims have been made that the call centre is being run by untrained operators who are unable to handle the volume of calls that comes in over weekends and public holidays when a lot of fatalities occur. It has been further reported that the call centre runs with a skeleton staff – placing more stress on those who are on duty. Superintendent Pool told us: “There is no staff crisis at the emergency call centre. These allegations are not true.” He said the statements in the newspapers were made by a disgruntled employee. Posts to work at the call centre are advertised in newspapers in July each year.


Our last interview was with Mandla Malgas from the CCMA who joined us in studio to discuss Resignations and Disciplinary Actions. Employees sometimes resign in the face of disciplinary action but the question is - does the employee have the right to resign, and if so, can he still refer a dispute of unfair dismissal to the CCMA after such resignation?
