Today we spoke to Dr Johan Nel – From Tygerberg Hospital’s Renal Unit. We were talking about kidney disease. Thursday is the World Kidney Day and the theme is Early Detection and Prevention. It is reported that the majority of individuals with early stages of Chronic Kidney Disease go undiagnosed, particularly in the developing world. The early detection of kidney impairment is essential and allows suitable treatment before kidney damage or deterioration manifests itself through other complications. Dr Nel explained more on how you can check if your kidneys are in good condition. For more information contact The National Kidney Foundation of SA at (011) 447-2531 or visit www.nkf.co.za

We were also joined by Nonkosi Dyakala – From the department of Health to talk about Healthy Lifestyle for women. Research has shown that South Africa, like other developing countries, is experiencing an increase in the burden of chronic diseases of lifestyle such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. These conditions are also link to obesity. The reason behind the increasing numbers is that people are living a desk-bound lifestyle. According to experts women who are obese often suffer from irregularities in the menstrual cycles and infertility. If a woman is obese during pregnancy it increases the risk of death of both the mother and the child. It also leads to an increase the risk of maternal high blood pressure by 10 times. Nonkosi explained more about the benefits of healthy lifestyle. For more information contact your nearest clinic or hospital.

Dr E.V. Rapiti – a family physician also joined us on the line to talk about Diarrhoea. It is a common problem that is usually not serious and can be effectively treated however severe or persistent diarrhea requires specific diagnosis and treatment. There are many causes of diarrhoea, including food poisoning, infection, malabsorbtion and inflammatory disease of the gut. In most cases diarrhea is often caused by viral stomach flu or food poisoning. Dr Rapiti told us more on how one can treat diarrhea and the difference between Infectious and Non-infectious Diarrhoea.
