Today we spoke to Elma Geswindt – Cosatu Provincial Administer. Last week Western Cape Senior Citizens marched to the Provincial Government in a bid to express their unhappiness against the low pension rate. The march was organised by the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Cosatu. Elma explained more about the senior citizens grievances. We were also joined instudio by Hassan Khan – CEO of the Haven Night Shelter to talk about the shelter and the services that they provide for adult people living on the streets. One of their missions is to promote community awareness of the social problems arising out of destitution and to encourage the participation of the public in the alleviation of such problems. Our last interview was with Veronica and Charles Nicholas. Veronica and Charles work as volunteers at the Grassy Park victim comfort room. The victim comfort rooms were established in various police station in the Western Cape in order for victioms of crime to feel more comfortable in giving their statements to police, or get counselling there for the trauma they were experiencing. We heard more about the support services that the Grassy Park Victim Comfort Room renders to the members of the public.
