The Sonke Gender Justice Network will be launching a Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) awareness raising campaign event in Gugulethu, at Yona taxi rank on the 22nd of February, from 11AM. Their Peer educators will be educating commuters about STI’s, HIV/AIDS and gender based violence. Your partnership in this initiative will be highly appreciated. This week is the Teen Suicide Prevention Week and the South African Depression and Anxiety Group will be focusing on educating the public about the serious issue of teen suicide. In South Africa, suicide is said to be the second leading cause of death in the 15 – 24 age group. It is vital to address feelings of depression, suicidality and low self-esteem in teens as early as possible to prevent teen suicide. And in today’s show were joined by Cassey Amor – from the South African Depression and Anxiety Group. Who explained more about the warning signs and what action to take if one identifies those signs. And we played a feature produced by Sakhisizwe’s producer Ilhaam Hoosain. Ilhaam spoke to Professor Erick Erickson, International specialist in the field of Osteoporosis, who was in the country to give talks on the latest developments and research on Osteoporosis. According to reports, Osteoporosis is a deadly epidemic affecting millions that does not appear frequently in the news. The visible part of the epidemic is the bone fractures that result in disability, dependency and death. The good news is that this epidemic is not only preventable but can be effectively treated. We closed off the show with an interview with Alan Marriott, a member of the British Academy of Hypnosis and a fully qualified and recognised Hypnotherapist.
