24 January – Labour
In today’s we were joined by Dawn Jackson – from You and Your money. This is the only non profit organisation in the country that is solely dedicated to fighting problems associated with household and personal debt. They guide groups and individuals towards control of their personal debt and towards gaining financial dignity. If you want more information about their programs you can call their offices on (021) 762 3287 or visit www.youandyourmoney.org.za
We also spoke to Clement Herandien – Regional Organiser of the National Union of Mineworkers of South Africa. It is reported that Unions are in talks with 500 companies who are forced to adjust working hours and shifts due to load shedding. According to newspaper reports, the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa has sent recommendations that management in this industry should pay workers for a minimum of four hours if they were forced to send them home due to power cuts. Clement explained more on what they and employers have agreed on. Our attempts to get SEIFSA’s representatives failed. For more information you can contact NUMSA Western Cape at (021) 945 1784 or visit www.labourprotect.co.za to get the employer’s side of the story go to www.seifsa.co.za or contact (021) 425 2627.

The union will embark on a strike action as from next week Monday the 28th and various strike actions will be happening till the 31st. On the 31st there will be a mass march on the Civic Centre followed by a stay away and a mass meeting of all workers on the 1st of February. Lance explained more about the worker’s grievances. The city of Cape Town declined to be part of the conversation. They faxed us this letter stating their reasons for declining the offer to give us their side of the story.
