11 December – Human Rights

Today on Sakhisizwe we had an interview with Patrick Kulati who is the Managing Director of the Paraffin Safety Association. The Paraffin Safety Association has recently developed a number of safety education resources directed at the primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of harmful paraffin related domestic incidents. For more information you can contact the Paraffin Safety Association on (021) 671 5767 or visit www.paraffinsafety.org. Patrick told us about how people can use such paraffin products safely as just this past weekend it was reported that about 400 fires in less than 72 hours left hundreds of informal settlement residents homeless. People are encouraged to be cautious. For fire related emergencies contact (021) 480 7700 or 107 from any landline in the Cape area.

Then we were joined by Happy Kwetana – Senior Facilitator for the Transitional Justice Programme which is part of the Peacebuilding Programme at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR). The programme was born out of the centre’s extended commitment to understand the irregular patterns of violence in society which emerges from political conflict. For more information you can contact their offices on (021) 447-2532 alternatively visit their website at www.csvr.org.za

Then our last interview was with Michael Ohlsson – from the Concerned Parents of Missing Children or CPMC. The organisation was established by Michael and his wife Michelle after their son Matthew went missing in 1997. CPMC aims to help track down other missing children. Concerned Parents of Missing Children was initially operational only in Mitchell’s Plain, however as a result of frequent requests from parents, their service now stretches across the Western Cape. Over the past eight years, the organisation has investigated 187 cases of missing children. From the 187 cases, 165 children were traced and reunited with their families. For more information you can contact their offices on (021) 372 7500 or send an email to mwscd@mweb.co.za alternatively report any missing child to CRIMESTOP 08600 10111.
