Today we spoke to Mr Rashied Khan – Regional Director of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. We were talking about the events that the department has hosted for the Arbor Week, ngesiZulu bathi “Iviki Lezihlahla”. The National Arbor Week serves to promote awareness for the need to plant and maintain indigenous trees throughout South Africa, especially for the many disadvantaged communities who often live in barren areas. Nawe ke you can contribute in protecting our environment by planting a tree. Trees are among the earth’s most useful and beautiful products of nature. And we also had an interview with Khanyiswa Zangqa and Lindela Mjenxane – from the Beyond Expectation Environmental Project. Lindela saw a need for education about the environment and began overnight camps for primary and high school youths from communities across the Western Cape. The two-day camps provide an opportunity for the young people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to experience the therapeutic surroundings of Table Mountain and learn about their environment as well as tackle social issues facing them. We were also joined by Nigel Vermaas for the Arts update in and around the city. He paid a tribute to jazz guitarist Johnny Fourie who died recently. And the great tenor voice and the most popular opera singer of the 2nd half of the 20th Century Luciano Pavarotti, who died of pancreatic cancer on Thursday morning at the age of 71, One year older than Johnny Fourie.
We closed off the show with an interview with Mr Glenn Robertson – From the Glenn Robertson Jazz Band. The musical style of the band is rooted in Jazz, but covers various genres of musical styles. We spoke about his music career and also some of the community upliftment project he is involved with.
