Today we spoke to Jane Notten – Businesswomen's Association Marketing portfolio Committee member. The Business Women’s Association is a non-profit, voluntary organisation that offers women business owners the opportunity to grow their businesses as well as creating business opportunities. This year the association in the Western Cape is calling for nominations for the regional business achiever awards. You must be nominated by a third party and can be put forward in any of the four categories. This includes start-ups, entrepreneurs, corporate and professional. And we also had an interview with Rita Edwards – From the New Women’s Movement. The New Women's Movement is a membership-based organisation consisting of poor, unemployed women who have joined together to lobby government around different issues like child support grant and domestic violence. Our last interview was with Anzabeth Ponken from the Development Action Group. It is a non-profit organisation that works throughout South Africa to fight poverty and promote integrated urban environments. Some of their work includes the formulation of new housing policies, land negotiations and the implementation of community-led housing developments. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
