Today we spoke to Advocate Brenda Madumise - National Arts Council Deputy Chairperson. The council consists of 22 members, which includes the Executive Committee members and the provincial representatives. The council members are sourced from the art industry and are industry specialists as well as from other disciplines that help in adding a range of expertise including law, accounting and management. Every year, it invests a significant amount of public funds in the arts in South Africa. The Council believes that the arts have the power to transform lives and communities, and to create opportunities for people throughout the country. We also spoke to Nicolas Spagnoletti – an actor from Improvision. Improvision is the company famous for playing TheatreSports. They are performing on Monday nights at the Intimate Theatre in Orange Street and on Tuesdays nights at the Kalk Bay Theatre. Entrance fee is R30 for students and R40 for adults and they are also participating in this year’s Cape Town Festival. And we also spoke to Nicolette Moses - Project Manager of Sithi@Baxter. Sithi@Baxter is a teenager life-skills theatre programme aimed at teaching young people life-skills through the medium of theatre, as well as creative writing, stagecraft and communication skills and they are inviting young people aged between 14 and 18 who are interested in being part of this exciting project to join the project. Our last interview was with Leanne Dollman. Leanne is a violin teacher at the Hout Bay Music Project. The Project teaches music, mainly string instruments, voice and drumming, to about 60 children from the historically disadvantaged communities of Hangberg Harbour Village and Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay. Life orientation programmes which aim to address issues of self esteem, HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy are also offered and are appealing to the people out there to support the project.
